About Us

Opportunity/Need

There is an ongoing need for public health and social services in the Haitian community due to persisting disparities in health, education, and socio-economic status.

There is a particular need for services among the families of new immigrants, where generational issues are most keenly felt. Parents with traditional Haitian values, are often perplexed by their own children, who are adopting American values.

Parents need more information on parenting and networking with others in the community who are having similar experiences, and a support system based on Haitian pride and culture. Parents in these hard-working families often hold several jobs, leaving them insufficient time for their families.

As a result, children in these families often lack much-needed support to successfully navigate an often hostile, resource-poor urban environment rife with issues such as violence, drugs, and a general hopelessness about the future.

YOFES Leaders:

YOFES Executive Director Nicole Prudent, M.D, is a pediatrician with a Masters degree in public health and over 20 years experience working with the Haitian community in Boston. She has been on the vanguard of health education for the Haitian community and has worked tirelessly to increase access to care for Haitian families and their children.

Dr. Prudent has developed numerous culturally competent programs. Among those we count: An infant mortality prevention program (Sante Maiman Ce Sande pi tit), which opened access to prenatal care for Haitian women, a case management program(Family Support Program), for families with children who are mentally challenged, OAMEC, a music program that open access to music education for children of chronically ill parents and other disadvantaged youth. In addition Dr. Prudent is a leader in community health education and has worked on multiple health education and outreach materials—including brochures, audio and video cassettes, media campaign-in Creole. For many years, she has mentored Haitian youth interested in pursuing careers in health and has developed programs, and institutionalized a youth-led that encourages youth leadership.

Geralde Gabeau, YOFES’ Program Director, holds two masters: one in Management and one in Public Health. She has extensive experience working in public health initiatives, particularly those addressing women’s health. She has also worked on public health initiatives for youth in Haiti. Her talent for team-building helps to bring people together to address the needs of children and families in local communities.

The director and the program Director are both Haitians and have worked in public service for many years, and are very familiar with the Haitian communities in the targeted locations such as Dorchester, Hyde Park, Marttapan, Roxbury and Rosalindale.
