WHO WE ARE

Youth and Families Enrichment Services, (YOFES) is a 501-C3, non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Massachusetts with the intention of “attacking the root causes of poverty, health and social disparities. YOFES’ mission is to build strong families that can raise healthy children in the face of poverty and social inequity. To accomplish this, YOFES is creating community interventions that engage the community’s participation in their conception, design, development and implementation.

STRATEGY:

To address these multiple needs, YOFES seeks to develop interventions that educate both parents and children, increase parental understanding of youth development, engage parents in guiding and supporting youth, help inner-city youth to meet contemporary health, education, and academic challenges, and engage youth as leaders in their own communities.

The Target Population

YOFES serves the growing Haitian community of greater Boston and surrounding towns and cities of Massachusetts. Haitians constitute the fastest growing population in Massachusetts and is widely spread as new comers are finding the city’s housing system grossly unfordable, they are spreading more outside of Boston where the services needed are not yet available. Newly arrived Haitian immigrants face cultural and linguistic challenges as they negotiate social service and medical systems of care. Preliminary research on locally available services indicates there is a gap in the provision of services to non-English and non-Spanish speaking populations. This is seen not only among Haitian immigrants, but also among an increasing number of new immigrants from West Africa. Little outreach is done to populations French-speaking or French-based languages. There is a dearth of social service and health education materials in French or Creole that are also attentive to issues of literacy and culture.
